Making the most of episodic antiviral therapy for genital herpes.
Over the past 12 years there have been no new drugs licenced for the treatment of uncomplicated genital herpes (GH) infection. What clinicians have instead seen is a refinement in the doses of the various agents used and an extension of these therapies into areas of management of herpes simplex virus (HSV) that were hitherto unexpected. PURPOSE Long-term acyclovir (ACV) prophylaxis, recommended to prevent recurrent herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) ocular disorders, may pose a risk for ACV-refractory disease due to ACV resistance. We determined the effect of ACV prophylaxis on the prevalence of corneal ACV-resistant (ACV(R)) HSV-1 and clinical consequences thereof in patients with recurrent HSV-1 keratitis (rHK). METHODS F...
متن کاملTargeting Herpetic Keratitis by Gene Therapy
Ocular gene therapy is rapidly becoming a reality. By November 2012, approximately 28 clinical trials were approved to assess novel gene therapy agents. Viral infections such as herpetic keratitis caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) can cause serious complications that may lead to blindness. Recurrence of the disease is likely and cornea transplantation, therefore, might not be the ideal t...

Background & Objectives: Herpes viruses can cause diseases in the clinical range. The virus can cause infection in various body parts, especially eyes and nervous system. The aim of this study was at evaluating the Real-Time TaqMan probe PCR in diagnosing and monitoring of the patients with suspected HSV infections.Materials & Methods: More than a thousand patients with suspected HSV infection...
متن کاملBilateral herpetic keratitis.
Thirty patients with bilateral herpetic keratitis were evaluated, 40% of whom were atopic. Stromal keratitis occurred in 40% of the eyes and recurrent ulceration in 68%. Four patients (5 eyes) developed secondary microbial keratitis. Visual acuity decreased to 6/60 or less because of corneal opacification in 17% of the eyes.
